Peace River and Wood Buffalo

I made it to Peace River after pushing for 1000kms. I should have stopped at 900 kms lol. Peace River was nothing to write home about or even space in the blog. Let's just say I found an ok hotel crashed and left asap the next morning.

The next day I thought I had a reletively easy drive of 800kms into the NWT to Wood Buffalo National Park. The gps stopped counting the kms when you enter the park so I ended up doing another 250 kms to my campsite oh well the drive and scenery were great.

Heading into NWT I stopped in to walk a trail that led to these nice waterfalls "Alexandra Falls". They were impressive.

Finally I made it to the right Park entrance which is just south of Fort Smith.

(Get it. A wood Buffalo)

I was the only person in the entire area. Seriously! It was already a remote area but to also be  the only person for 50kms was a bit unnerving. Lol

So I picked the best spot and set up camp.

Went down to the lake. Very nice.

It was so quiet reading next to the fire. So much so that a loon calling out on the lake scared the "heck" out of me. So much for peace and quiet.

Next morning it was up with the birds. Sunrise was like 4 am. Had a camp breakfast and then headed for the trail. Did a 13 km hike along the lake. It was a  very narrow and  technical trail thru the woods. About 1 km in I started seeing.....bison scat on the trail. Great all I needed to do was run into a herd of bison on this itty bitty trail.

After the hike a nice looking chick stopped by with her mom and siblings.

Back at the campsite the park  ranger stopped by to chat and to give me a heads up on the forecast. Heavy rain and thunderstorms late afternoon and overnight. I thanked her and decided to pack up camp, see the rest of the park (salt plains) and then head to Yellowknife.

The next two pictures are of the famous salt plains.

It was an 11km drive down a single lane dirt road thru a forest that had recently burned.

Oh and there were lots of Buffalo.

So now I am in Yellowknife its 11:30pm and still sunny. Tomorrow I am doing the touristy thing in Yellowknife.

  1. I would never get sick of buffalo pictures, so please continue uploading.

And I hate loons. They come out of nowhere and scare the crap out of me with their red eyes. They are pure evil.
